How to Break Into the Outdoor Industry with No Industry Experience
The outdoor industry looks like a closed club from the outside, but most people currently working in it broke in from somewhere else. The path in isn't about faking passion. It's about identifying a transferable skill (sales, marketing, ops, merchandising, customer service), targeting smaller or founder-led brands that hire on capability over pedigree, building real market knowledge before applying, networking sideways through reps and adjacent roles instead of only cold-applying, and leading applications with quantified results rather than enthusiasm. The core message: brands need people who can do the job, not just people who love the outdoors. Prove you're the former, and the resume gap matters a lot less.
